Walking
On arrival in Alderney, visit the Alderney Visitor Information Centre in lower Victoria Street opposite the Memorial Gardens. Find out what to do and what to see and pick up free advice, literature and leaflets about recommended walks and tours.
With over 50 miles of walks and paths taking you across commons, beaches, along the cliffs and around town, the best way to discover Alderney is on foot. The south coast is mainly dramatic cliff walks, dotted with Victorian and German fortifications and the northwest coastline (towards the bird sanctuary island of Burhou) is designated a RAMSAR site. Along the north and east coast can be found golden beaches interspersed with picturesque Victorian forts and the occasional reminder of the German occupation during WWII.
You can join one of the many interesting guided walks - ranging from town walks, history, heritage and bird watching tours to nocturnal bat walks which are organised by the Alderney Wildlife Trust in cooperation with the Alderney Society. (Dependent upon demand please call 822935 for details)

Andy Goldworthy's - Alderney Stones Project
Leading British artist Andy Goldsworthy, who produces site specific sculpture, chose Alderney as the location for his project Alderney Stones. The project involved the construction and siting of eleven, 5ft diameter, rammedearth stones, each containing materials and objects from around Alderney. These 3-tonne boulders have been placed in various locations around the island.
Each stones contains materials such as berries, seeds, old tools and discarded gloves etc all of these materials will then be revealed over time, through the natural process of erosion. To help you discover the stones we have created a map which features a recommended coastal walk of the stones and also contains more direct routes - Alderney Stones Map

Video Tour of the Bailiwick
A video show-casing the beautiful islands of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Get an idea of what an island hoping holiday can offer within the close but diverse islands of Alderney, Guernsey, Sark & Herm.
The Channel Island Way is a walking guide published in 2011 by Coast Media which links all the perimeter walks around the Channel Islands into one, 110 mile route. We were sponsored by visitguernsey to walk sections of the route and produce a series of audio podcasts about the walks, the islands and some of the people we met on route. This video will give you an idea of our journey as we travel to Guernsey initially, before landing on Herm. A day later, we took the ferries to Sark, for another 2 days coastal walking. Once we return to Guernsey, we walk the East, South and West coasts and then spend a day on Alderney before returning to Guernsey for an afternoon on the water and heading home. The 6 part audio series contains interviews with key people and we share our thoughts on terrain, equipment and accommodation. It was a lightweight backpacking trip for us and the book proved to be an invaluable guide. For more information about these and over 300 other podcasts please visit The Outdoors Station.
