The Alderney Railway
Alderney has the only working railway in the Channel Islands, thanks to the support and enthusiasm of the volunteers, who keep the railway operating throughout the Summer season.
The railway, opened by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1847, celebrated its 150th birthday in 1997 and attracts enthusiasts from all over the world. Elizabeth, the diesel engine, pulls two old London Underground carriages built in 1959 along a scenic coastal route from the harbour up to the north-east coast, cutting across country towards Mannez Quarry and the nearby Mannez Lighthouse. Upon arrival at Mannez Quarry, there is the opportunity to join an Alderney lighthouse tour or take a ride on the miniature train, before the train departs on its return journey to Braye Harbour.
Alderney's railway operates on bank holidays and at weekends throughout the summer season. The railway not only attracts railway enthusiasts, but anybody who enjoys a ride through the countryside. For more details about the Alderney Railway click here
