Air Races

The Alderney Air Races are a major aviation event, highly competitive and great fun. Over 20 planes from around the British Isles compete in the 100+ mile races which are part of the Royal Aero Club’s British Air Racing Championships.

The last race in a series of nine races staged around Britain, takes place in Alderney every year in September.  The final contestants battle it out in the air in two 100-mile handicap races for the title of British Air Racing Champion.

Organised by the Royal Aero Club, this major annual aviation event attracts a variety of aircraft types ranging from the slowest at 120mph - Bulldogs, Grummans, Mooneys and Bonanzas - to a Beechcraft Baron, which can fly at a terrifying 240 mph, pulling around 4G in 80 degree turns around certain scatter points.

Both Alderney races involve six laps of a circuit following along the island’s south coast, beyond forts Raz and Albert and the Breakwater, around Burhou Island, the Casquets Lighthouse and due east, back to the airport.

The 2008 British Air Racing Champion title was won by Ally Allan and his navigator Craig Beever, in their Siai Machetti SF260W which reached speeds of 210mph.
