Mannez Lighthouse

The Lighthouse, built in 1912, is the island’s most prominent landmark and is situated at the eastern end of the island at Quesnard Point.

It was built to act as a guide to passing shipping and to warn vessels of the treacherous waters around the island. The lighthouse tower rises 105ft (32 metres) and is painted white with a central black band to make it more visible to shipping during daylight.  Its beam (four white flashes every 15 seconds) carries across 12 sea miles.

Automated in 1997 the Lighthouse is now monitored and controlled from the Trinity House Central Planning Unit at Harwich in Essex. The present warden organises conducted tours throughout the summer. The steep climb to the top of the tower is quite demanding but well worth the effort.
