Alderney has always been a birdwatcher paradise: migration is amazing and often surprising and its abundant seabird colonies absolutely stunning! Tangible evidence of the importance of Alderney for the global bird migration were lacking though, and it’s exactly what the Alderney Bird Observatory (ABO) enabled to get over the last two years.
Thanks to the hard work of the warden, several assistants and many volunteers, the ABO manage to demonstrate that Alderney is a hotspot for bird migration through a daily bird recording and ringing effort. Last month, the ABO received official accreditation from the Bird Observatory Council becoming the 20th British Bird Observatory! Alderney is now recognised as one of the best places where to follow the bird migration in the British Isles, among others well-known such as Skokholm, Fair Isle, Portland or Spurn.
