Film Premiere of Alderney, The War Years

Saturday 23rd December – 7.30pm

at the Alderney Cinema

Following their successful Crowdfunder Appeal, Eye Film have now completed the final film in the trilogy, telling the story of Alderney during WWII. Alderney – The War Years concentrates on the time period between the Evacuation on June 23rd 1940 and immediate aftermath of its liberation on May 16th 1945, discovering who visited the island during the German occupation, using the accounts of those who were there wherever possible. Eye Film has also followed the lives of the Alderney evacuees as they come to terms with living as refugees on the British mainland. It has been a fascinating and at times demanding task, taking the producers as far afield as Israel and Berlin, as well as spending time researching archives in Alderney, Guernsey, UK, Germany and the Moscow State archive in Russia, . “This has been by far the hardest story to tell, mainly due to the limited number of people who are still alive today who were on the island, which is why it has taken us so long to produce,” commented the producer/director Charlie Gauvain, “and we would like to thank everyone who has helped us along the way as there have been so many, we really couldn’t have done it without you”.

For anyone who doesn’t know the back story, in 2015 when Alderney remembered the 75th anniversary of the evacuation of the island, Eye Film ran its first successful crowd funding campaign, which resulted in them travelling to Alderney and filming interviews with many islanders, capturing their own unique, very personal stories about the Evacuation on June 23rd 1940 and their Homecoming on December 15th 1945. The two films which followed, Alderney – The Evacuation and then Alderney – The Homecoming are already available via The Alderney Wildlife Trust.
