Discover a wild and wonderful island

Alderney might be small but it’s brimming with natural charm and character. Think dramatic cliffs, flower-strewn headlands, quiet woodlands and golden gorse that lights up the landscape in spring. It’s a place where nature has the limelight, and the locals wouldn’t have it any other way.

The island is a haven for wildlife lovers. Gannets nest in their thousands on the offshore rocks of Les Etacs, puffins live on nearby Burhou island and seals often pop up along the coast to say hello. You might even spot the famous blonde hedgehog if you’re lucky! They’re a rare local resident that’s become something of a celebrity in these parts.

You can take it all in at your own pace, whether that’s a leisurely stroll through Longis Nature Reserve or a hike along the clifftop paths with your binoculars at the ready. If you’d rather let someone else lead the way, the Alderney Wildlife Trust offers brilliant guided walks and boat tours that bring the island’s wildlife and habitats to life.

Their events calendar is packed year-round with talks, family activities and seasonal highlights like Wildlife Week, which celebrates the island’s biodiversity with everything from puffin-spotting boat trips to wild food foraging adventures.

So whether you’re a casual wanderer or a dedicated naturalist, Alderney is the perfect place to tune into the wild and reconnect with the natural world.

Find your own quiet spot by the sea

Alderney’s beaches are the kind of places you dream about on busy days. Peaceful, pristine and never crowded, they’re perfect for laying down a towel and diving into a book or the sea (or both). You won’t be jostling for space here.

From the golden sands of Braye to the soft curves of Saye, every bay has its own charm.

Sea swimming is a big hit with locals. Some brave the water for a sea swim every day, while others opt for a quick dip followed by a snooze on the sand. However you like it, the island’s calm, clear waters are perfect for a paddle.

If you fancy something a bit more adventurous, you can also hire a paddle board or kayak and explore the island’s sheltered coastline at your own pace. It’s a brilliant way to see Alderney from the water and spot wildlife along the way.

Slow right down

There’s something wonderfully old-fashioned about Alderney’s pace of life. No rush, no traffic jams, no stress. Just quiet lanes, friendly faces and time to enjoy the moment.

Wander the cobbled streets of St Anne, pop into a café for a homemade cake or chat to a local about the best places to explore. The island’s community spirit is strong and you’ll always get a smile or a wave as you pass.

Midweek visits are especially peaceful. You’ll find more choice when it comes to flights and places to stay, and you’re more likely to have a footpath or beach all to yourself.

Stretch your legs or jump on a bike

Alderney is criss-crossed with walking trails that take you through woodlands, over cliffs and along some of the most scenic coastlines in the British Isles. Whether you’re up for a leisurely stroll or a longer hike, there’s a route for every kind of wanderer.

Prefer two wheels? The quiet roads and ever-changing views make cycling a real joy. You can do a full loop of the island in half a day, though we recommend taking your time and stopping off at a few hidden bays and historic sites along the way.

Boost your wellbeing

If your idea of switching off includes a bit of self-care, Alderney won’t disappoint. You can join a beach yoga class with YogAlderney or enjoy a peaceful solo session surrounded by sea air and the sound of waves.

For something really special, try the Adrift Sauna. Tucked right on the beach at Braye or Corblets, it’s the perfect place to warm up, relax and then take a refreshing plunge in the sea. It’s as close to nature as wellness gets.

There are also regular wellbeing walks led by local volunteers. These gentle strolls are a great way to explore, meet others and feel good from the inside out.
