Squeeze out the last drops of summer in Alderney

By Caroline Gauvain

As summer slowly packs its bags, Alderney still has a few golden moments left to share. With its glowing skies, migrating birds and community charm, now’s the perfect time for a spontaneous island escape before autumn fully settles in.

So if you’ve been craving a change of pace, a sunset walk or even the atmosphere of a cosy pub, we’ve got five very good reasons to hop over before the summer season says goodbye.

Sunsets Last Days Of Summer

End your day with a gorgeous sunset

The skies over Alderney love to show off in late summer. Think fiery oranges, deep purples and skies so clear you’ll be reaching for your camera (and then putting it away to just enjoy the moment).

Whether you’re sat on the sand at Saye, up at Fort Tourgis or strolling the cliffs at dusk, the island has a magical way of helping you unwind without even trying.

And it’s not just the skies. The salty air, soft waves and wild landscapes create an instant sense of calm that sticks with you long after you’ve left.

Spot migrating birds on their autumn stopover

Late summer and early autumn is a brilliant time for birdwatching. Alderney is a pit stop for migrating birds on their way south and the island’s wetlands and coastal habitats are a couple of go to spots to see some passing feathered visitors.

Whether you're wandering through Longis Nature Reserve or a stroll through Bonne Terre valley, keep your eyes peeled for waders, warblers and other winged guests just passing through.

For a guided experience, check out what’s on with the Alderney Wildlife Trust as they run regular tours and seasonal events that bring the island’s nature to life.

Get stuck into island life for the day

You don’t need to stay a week to feel like a local. Alderney’s welcoming community makes it easy to dive into island life for the day. Join a morning yoga session, ring the bells at St Anne’s Church or lend a hand with a conservation project through the Alderney Wildlife Trust.

The Daily What’s On board is your go-to for everything from wellbeing walks to bingo nights. Whether it’s a creative workshop, a bowls match or a coastal litter pick, you’ll be met with friendly faces and a cuppa (or pint) afterwards.

Paddle Last Days Of Summer

Stay active and soak up the outdoors

There’s still time to enjoy Alderney’s great outdoors while the sun sticks around. Whether you're in the mood for something energetic or just want to stretch your legs with a view, the island has walking trails suitable for all fitness levels.

Fancy a friendly match? Alderney’s tennis courts and brand new padel courts are a great way to work up a sweat – and you don’t need to be a pro to have a laugh. Or head up to the island’s 9-hole golf course, where the fairways come with sweeping sea views. No tee times, no crowds, just you and the course.

If the sea is calm (and it often is this time of year), it’s a brilliant moment to try paddle boarding. Hire a board and glide across the glassy shallows of Braye Bay. You’ll likely have the water to yourself, except for the odd curious seal.

Fort Tourgis Last Days Of Summer

Explore history by day, stars by night

There’s something quite special about exploring Alderney’s forts and heritage sites in the golden light of late summer. From Fort Doyle to the newly opened Napoleonic Telegraph Tower, the island’s history feels even more atmospheric when the crowds are gone and all that’s left is time to pause, reflect and take it all in.

And when the sun finally slips away, don’t forget to look up. With minimal light pollution, Alderney is one of the best places in the British Isles for stargazing. Find a quiet bench overlooking the southern cliffs or head to a tucked-away bay and lose yourself in the constellations.

Ready for one last summer adventure?

You don’t need a whole week. Just a few days on Alderney is enough to breathe a bit deeper, meet a few friendly faces and enjoy the slower, simpler pleasures of island life.

The season’s not quite over and Alderney is ready to share its final, golden moments.
